How to prepare a traditional mate

1. Fill the gourd (mate) about 3/4 full with Amanda yerba mate.
2. Tilt the gourd so that the yerba piles up on one side.
3. Moisten the yerba with warm water on the lower side, without wetting all of it.
4. Insert the bombilla into the damp part and pour in water at about 70 °C, always at the side of the bombilla. Never use boiling water – it burns the yerba and makes it bitter.

Other ways: brew 1–2 teaspoons per cup in a French press or teapot with water at 70–80 °C for 3–5 minutes. For tereré, use cold water or juice instead of hot water.

Precautions

Yerba mate naturally contains caffeine. It is not recommended for children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people who are sensitive to caffeine. Avoid drinking it late in the evening if caffeine affects your sleep. Do not drink it very hot – water at around 70 °C is ideal.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place away from strong odours. Once opened, keep the yerba in its original pack, tightly closed, or transfer it to a container with a lid.
